Som
etimes you need them, sometimes you don’t, but it’s always handy to have some essential gadgets for camping and backpacking tucked away into your backpack.
Jerry and I don’t really do backpacking trips.
We do however, load a backpack up and take with us on our excursions on the quad.
A few gadgets for camping and backpacking we like to have handy:
- GOOD Flashlight
- First Aid Kit
- Good quality compass and map (or GPS)
- Mulit-tool
- matches in a water proof container
There are a few other odds and ends we’ll stick in the backpack along with the above gadgets.
It seems that GPS has pretty much replaced a good compass and map, but one thing to really remember……GPS’s can make mistakes.
So, learn to use a compass and read a map. Jerry and I rely on specific maps whenever we scout out a new hunting/camping area. Two mapmakers that we trust are Benchmark and DeLorme. We have several different maps and atlas’s for individual states.
All you have to do is read th
e news, and every year you hear of someone getting lost when listening to their GPS.
Something else we try to carry with us when out riding the quad, or just even camping is some rope or even some paracord.
You can even get a bracelet made out of the paracord so you always have it with you ……just in case!
You definitely want a sturdy, well built flashlight on your list of gadgets for camping and backpacking…..
I know there have been times in the past we will be out doing something and go to grab a flashlight, and “snap” the batteries are dead, or the bulb doesn’t work or the beam is to low or………..
So, we took the time and found a GREAT flashlight (actually about 4 of them). We have one on the quad, one in the backpack, one in the truck and I always keep a few in our travel trailer.
And of course, you’re gonna need a backpack that suits your needs. If all you do is some day backpacking and -like us- throw a backpack on your quad for the day- then you just need a compact sized backpack.
I found some great deals over at Amazon……just click on the links below to read the product description and consumer reviews.
